During a roundtable meeting, Deputy Director of Russia's Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance agency (Rosselkhoznadzor) Aleksey Alekseyenko said that the two main obstacles that prospective trade partners face are logistical issues in addition to the volatility of the ruble.

On December 5 a 800 tonne shipment of lemons and oranges left the port of Latakia, Syria, headed for the Russian market, as confirmed by Syrian businessman Amjad Duba. 

Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich made a statement at a recent appearance, during which he said that Turkish ground shipments could also face restrictions when entering Russia.

As of Saturday (Nov 27) about 150 trucks carrying agricultural products were stopped at the Russian-Azerbaijan border. The logistical issues were the result of strikes initiated by truck drivers frustrated over the newly introduced transport tariffs applied to large vehicles in Russia.

The import ban, active since August 2014, has completely altered domestic logistics, the supply chain of goods as well as international trade trends.
