Russia's President: Country Should Be Self Sufficient In Produce Production By 2020 Featured

14 December 2015

Russia has made a breakthrough in the agricultural sector in a short amount of time, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a his address to the federal assembly. “Just 10 years ago we practically imported half of [our] food from abroad, dependent on imports,” Putin said. “Now Russia is one of the exporters.”

During this speech, Putin said that obtaining food security by 2020 “is a national challenge”. Within five years, Russia will not only be able to provide its citizens with necessary products but also supply other countries with eco-friendly food products. He added that for now it's necessary to focus on developing agricultural resources to get the program started.

The president emphasized that in 2014 Russian exports reached a monetary value of US $20 million, “a quarter more than the proceeds from the sale of arms and one third of revenues from gas exports”.
