The customs agency in Sochi reported that since the start of “mandarin season”, suppliers harvested 10, 200 tonnes of citrus. Last year, 11,700 tonnes of these fruits were harvested. The dip in volume is the result of a rainy and cold autumn affected the ripening of fruits in Abkhazia.
The head of the customs post MAPP Adler Denis Voronin said that Russia and Abkhazia have a system of free trade, similar to the agreement between the Russian market and countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Therefore, suppliers only pay domestic charges associated with customs when crossing the Abkhazian-Russian border. Also legislation does not restrict the quantity of imported goods nor do companies need to pay 18 percent of the VAT for customs value of the shipment.
