Russia To Reach Self-Sufficiency In Domestic Vegetable Production By 2020 Featured

17 February 2016

During a meeting led by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the head of the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Alexander Tkachev, said that domestic vegetable producers could put the country on track toward reaching self-sufficiency in about four years.

“We are planning to practically reach 100 percent self-sufficiency by the year 2020 for such food products like milk, meat and vegetables, and as for fruit, just maintain imports of only those citrus and exotic fruit that don’t grow in our country,” Tkachev said.

Medvedev also said that the counter sanctions have been beneficial for domestic agricultural production in addition to the import substitution measures, enacted by the government, that have helped to maintain industry growth.
