According to Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) the total harvest volume of fruit and berry production at orchards of agricultural organisations in 2015 dropped by 5.1 percent on the year to 612.5 thousand tonnes. The average amount harvested per hectare of land, however, grew by 13.3 percent – 9.7 tonnes per hectare.

Because the average purchasing power of Russians has dropped, hypermarkets could get a leg up on local competition by offering low prices and a large assortment of goods, said Maxim Palt, senior analyst for market research at the consulting firm CBRE Group, Inc.

Head of Moscow's Department of Trade and Services Alexei Nemeryuk said during a press conference that European food products have made their way to Russian store shelves. Although, it's difficult to determine in which country the products were produced, he said.
